Mice are a critical piece of the research puzzle to cure rare disease like Tay-Sachs. Many of the diseases that affect humans also affect the animal world. A mouse born with a genetic disorder is a wonderful opportunity for our team of researchers to try out possible cures. If we can cure a mouse of this terrible disease, perhaps we can cure a child.
Once a genetic disease is found in a mouse family, the gene is often passed from generation to generation and that creates a much needed supply of patients for our researchers.
The down side is the poor, sick mouse is in the laboratory all alone. They need to know that someone is out there rooting for them to get better - rooting for them to beat Tay-Sachs disease. You could be that person.
